Start-ups and the Swiss Economic Forum

The last few weeks have been packed with producing stories for CNNMoney Switzerland ahead and during the Swiss Economic Forum 2019. Hannah Wise and I reported from the event.

The theme of the forum was «Optimism», but I wondered if that was really the talking point:

I shoot this video with my smartphone and a gimbal and for better sound quality I used a microphone.

And while I was editing that video above, Hannah Wise was live on CNNMoney Switzerland talking to Olivia Chang. I was amazed how effortlessly she gave a recap for almost 10 min!

After a working day, we also got to enjoy some time with the team before a second day of coverage. Here’s Hannah, our Hair & Make-up artist Sophia & me outside the event location.

On the second day Boris Johnson was the main attraction. Especially after Theresa May announced her resignation as British Prime Minister, everyone wanted to know what he had to tell the audience:

CNNMoney Switzerland’s focus ahead of #SEF19 was highlighting start-ups nominated for a Swiss Economic Award. As SME’s are the backbone of the Swiss economy.

We started with Stefan Heitmann, Founder of the start-up PriceHubble. The proptech firm is now tapping into the Chinese market with the help of Chinese insurance company Ping An.

Another interesting company was Astrocast. The EPFL spin-off is working on a satellite network for the Internet of Things. By using nano satellites the company wants to make IoT affordable, Fabien Jordan told us:

From space back to planet earth: Nikin is a young clothing brand with a mission. They plant a tree for every product sold. And talking about sustainability, New Roots produces vegan cheese. Yes, you heard right! Now there’s non-dairy cheese which tastes like the original. Their product is also used for the plant-based Beyond burger at Helvti Diner.

New Roots ended up winning the Swiss Economic Award in the category Industry / Production. Another winner was PXL Vision, who’s CEO Michael Born I also got to interview:

The Swiss Economic Award winners got CHF 25,000 each. How will they use this funds? Here’s what they told me:

The forum was also an opportunity to meet several entrepreuneurs simultaneously. This was a chance to find out why many go abroad.
